Sometimes we reject an experience that has happened to us because we so desperately want something else to be true. Insisting that the past be different is a painful, deceptive way to relate to life. We may think that if we do not accept the past, we are in some way protecting ourselves. The pain seems so unbearable that to fully let it in would be to experience annihilation. Somehow we believe that to separate ourselves from the experience is safety. Paradoxically, the opposite is true: allowing yourself to feel the loss is how you embrace life.
